This approach to roofing makes solar installation difficult when attaching to rafters. Locations between the 1x4s will have a gap between the roof deck and the rafter making for a questionable connection. The 1x4s can also be deceiving, as they may seem like a structural member of the roof when searching for a structural attachment. But, the 1x4 of the skip sheathed roof will not provide the support or necessary strength required for a successful solar installation.

New research from the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) finds that several features offered by Zilla’s Double Stud XL Flashing are key to reducing solar installation costs.
The RMI and Georgia Tech Research Institute report found that, in the United States, the median installation labor cost for a rooftop system is $0.49 per watt. However, in Germany, the median installation labor cost is just $0.18 per watt.

Ken Sanger of Solar Dad and Sons has been in solar for 24 years. Earlier this year, he ran into a situation that threw him and his team of expert solar installers for a loop. In December, Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and Georgia Tech Research Institute released their study on how to cut solar PV soft costs. The main finding in their classic time-and-motion studies illustrated that nearly 60% of a solar install is attributed to “soft costs”. U.S. installers incur median installation costs of $0.49 per watt. But top-of-the-line U.S. installers can incur installation costs as low as $0.29 per watt. With racking and mounting making up 32% of the $0.49 median installation costs, it is also one of the biggest areas for improvement.
